Zulu King's speech investigated over claims he called gays rotten A newspaper in South Africa has sparked an investigation into whether Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini called gay people "rotten".

According to the BBC, South Africa's Human Rights Commission – who have obtained transcripts of the keynote speech – are looking into the matter after South Africa's Times newspaper made the claim.

The royal household have reportedly denied that the king made any homophobic comments - instead "reckless translation" – but, according to the BBC, the publicationa are standing by their translation.

HRC spokesperson Vincent Moaga told them it will be writing to the king and demand an immediate retraction if the allegations are correct.

"If it is indeed accurate that His Majesty, the Zulu king, made the utterances as reported, they constitute hate speech... and are inflammatory," Moaga said.

Adding: "The commission is also concerned that the king made his utterances in the presence of President Jacob Zuma.

"The president is entrusted with the defence of South Africa's Constitution and cannot remain silent in the face of such attacks. The commission will also be raising this matter with the president."
