Central to Zanele Muholi's work are portraits of black lesbians that are, she says, a form of "visual activism to ensure . . . black queer visibility". This is particularly urgent today, given the epidemic of "corrective rape" against lesbians, despite South Africa's official embrace of gay and lesbian equality.
Zanele uses photography and artistic experimentation to explore issues of lesbian gender and sexuality in South Africa. Through her visual activism, she seeks to educate different cultures on the issues facing black South African lesbians.
