Timothy Miller is charged with helping Lisa Miller, no relation, flee the country with the daughter she had with her ex-wife Janet Jenkins.
Miller, a Mennonite minister and missionary, has pled not guilty to all charges involved in the case. He did not attend his arraignment in federal court in Burlington. Instead, his public defender entered the plea for him. According to prosecutors, Miller fled to Nicaragua in 2009 because Rutland County Family Court Judge William Cohen had ordered that full custody be granted to Lisa Miller’s ex-wife Janet Jenkins after Ms Miller had violated orders to give Ms Jenkins visitation rights to see Isabella.
Every court in Virginia, where Lisa Miller lived, and Vermont as well as the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ms Jenkins. Despite not being biologically related to Isabella, their relationship is covered by the same laws that grants parental rights to fathers of children conceived via sperm donors.
