Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto reveals he’s gay Zachary Quinto, the actor famed for his role as Spock in the 2009 Star Trek film, has revealed he is gay and insists there is “so much work to be done” in addressing gay rights.

In an interview with the New York Magazine, Quinto refers to himself as “a gay man” when answering questions about his role  as a queer man who abandons his boyfriend who is dying from AIDS in the theatre production of Angels in America.

Speaking about the role, he said it was “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding”. And he added: “As a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”

During his career, Quinto has played a number of gay roles and also recorded a video message for the ‘It Gets Better’ campaign to tackle homophobic bullying. But with speculation rife, he refused to be drawn on his sexuality in an interview with the New York Times last year.

The 34-year-old also makes clear his concern over the disparity in addressing the needs of gay people in society, pointing to the suicide of a teenager who had been bullied for being gay just months after a big step forward in New York concerning the legalising of same-sex marriage.

He told the New York Magazine: “As a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves.”
