St John Lutheran Church, in South Roanoke County, have voted to split from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America over the issue of allowing lesbian and gay people to join the clergy.
The move to break away from the established church comes after a decision, in Minneapolis in August, to allow same-sex couples to become clergymen and clerywomen.
Church Pastor at St John, described the issue as the 'biggest challenge in the church's 51 year history. A final vote will be held in January 2010.
