SF Protest Against Anti-Gay Bills in UgandaSAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Gay rights leaders held a vigil in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza Thursday to denounce an anti-gay bill under consideration in Uganda. The proposal would execute gays who have sex with anyone under 18, or if they're HIV-positive. David Bahati, the Ugandan MP pushing the legislation, is a member of "The Family," a secretive American evangelical Christian organization. San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty said it's time for the Obama administration to threaten to withhold aid to Uganda if it doesn't kill the bill. "Legislation that would mandate the execution of people who are gay or HIV-positive runs absolutely counter to any humanity principles," Dufty said. "It's also bad science and it will certainly contribute to furthering the AIDS pandemic in Africa and particularly in Uganda." Bahati said his measure has been distorted by "hysterical international media" and he defended his proposal on the BBC. "We think that homosexuality is not a human right. It is not in-born. It is a behavior that is learned and it can be unlearned," said Bahati. Under pressure, Christian conservatives are distancing themselves from the legislation, which the board of supervisors and Mayor Newsom plan to formally denounce next week. |
