Russian lesbians Irina Fedotova-Fet and Irina Shipitko have been married in Toronto, Canada by openly gay judge Harvey Brownstone.
As same-sex marriages remain illegal in Russia the couple were turned away by their local registry office and were forced to marry abroad after Russian authorities refused to recognise their union.
Upon their return to their homeland the newly-weds will seek to take advantage of a loophole in Russian law which does not specify the gender of couples who marry outside of Russia.
