Police schedule open house for Gay and Lesbian's to discuss Unit changes

D.C. police have scheduled an open house to discuss changes to its Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit.

Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes and other leaders of the unit will answer questions at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Reeves Center's Edna Frazier Community Room, 2000 14th St. NW. For information, call 202-727-9493. To register, visit http://glbt.dc.gov.

Doctors, others to discuss macular degeneration

The Prevention of Blindness Society is having a town meeting on macular degeneration from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Sibley Memorial Hospital's Ernst Auditorium, 5255 Loughboro Rd. NW.

The event is free and open to the public.

Doctors and researchers will discuss how neurological diseases and drug treatments might be related to age-related macular degeneration, among other topics.

Family Court ceremony to honor Adoption Day

The D.C. Superior Court's Family Court and the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency will celebrate National Adoption Day with a ceremony Nov. 21.

More than 30 children and their adoptive families will get their final adoption decree at the event from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 21 in the third-floor atrium of the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, 500 Indiana Ave. NW.

In addition, prospective foster or adoptive parents can talk with social workers. Children's activities are planned.

D.C. students to write to authors in contest

D.C. students in grades one to 12 will write letters to authors explaining how their books influenced them for the national Letters About Literature contest.

Six national winners will get a $10,000 grant for their community or school library. The deadline is Dec. 7. For information, go to http://www.dclibrary.org.

Artists to display work at Takoma Station underpass

Five artists have been selected as semifinalists create public art for Takoma Metro station underpass walls at 327 Cedar St. NW.

Their work will be displayed for community feedback from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 19 and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Takoma Public Library, 416 Cedar St. NW.

In July, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities solicited artists to design and install artwork for the station underpass as part of its DC Creates! Public Art Program and Metro's Art in Transit program. The agency budgeted $250,000 for the project.

Parks and Recreation starts community garden program

The D.C. Parks and Recreation Department announced last week that it will install community gardens open to everyone at 56 recreation centers.

Americorps National Civilian Community Corps members will install most of the gardens. Department staff members, youths and seniors in each community are encouraged to maintain the gardens. Teams are installing planter boxes and plan to have garden beds ready by spring.
