Despite same-sex couples being mentioned by President Barak Obama in his Proclamation for 'Family Day 09' LGBT commentators have given the Proclamation a 'cool' reception.
His statement endorsed the family unit regardless as to how that family unit was constructed and specifically included lesbian and gay couples.
Lesbian and Gay community activist are concerned that Obama is merely paying lip-service to LGBT issues after his administration gave its backing to the 1996 Defence of Marriage Act.
His refusal to sign an executive order that would prevent lesbian and gay military personnel from being discharged has further incensed the lesbian and gay community.
