Twelve staff at Surrey Police have completed training to become lesbian and gay liaison officers (LAGLOs).
Alongside their existing role in the force, LAGLOs will work to build trust and communication with Surrey's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.
They will also offer practical advice, support and a dedicated point of contact for victims of homophobic crime.
A police spokeswoman said the new LAGLOs, a mixture of officers and staff from departments across the county, will now build on their initial training and work to identify and share the best methods of practice with colleagues.
Mick Day, head of Surrey Police's diversity directorate, said: "Any form of hate crime is a serious offence and this training programme demonstrates our continued commitment to working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”
He said: “Hate crime often goes unreported but by improving lines of communication with the police, we can get the message out that we are here to help and you can speak to us."
People wishing to contact a member of the LAGLO team should call 01483 630474.
