'Fans of lesbian cinema know all too well its familiar low points: the oft-bemoaned wooden acting, coy sex scenes, and poor production values. Still, we persevere because of the onetime scarcity of the films and because of the incredible highs achieved by a few female directors making good in the boys’ club of filmmaking, among them Lisa Cholodenko, whose earlier films (High Art, Laurel Canyon) earned her the clout to direct Julianne Moore and Annette Bening in her latest, The Kids Are All Right'
