Lesbian Football Team Attacked with Fireworks

Players from a lesbian football team have become the latest victims of homophobia after being attacked with live fireworks during a training match.
The London Lesbian Kickabouts (LLKA) were training in their town of Camden when local youths began throwing fireworks onto their pitch.
Heidi Myfler, the team’s goalkeeper, told The Camden New Journal: “I saw a ‘rocket’ come over and when it went out I wasn’t sure if I should approach it or not. Then more fireworks were thrown over the fence and they were shooting across the pitch in all directions. It was very dangerous.
“We could see the kids running around and hiding between the cars, watching the whole scene. I suppose that’s the fun of it for them.”
The team have been subject to a campaign of hate crime and harassment since they began training at Camden’s Castlehaven sports pitch eight years ago. A similar firework attack left a player badly burned two years ago.
Players say they have been pelted with eggs and rocks from a nearby building site, spat at and heckled by male teenagers who object to seeing women playing the male-dominated sport.
LLKA member Gill Rimmer said the team had grown accustomed to being targeted: “We’ll generally get kids pushing their bikes through the middle of the game. If we ask them to get out of the way they shout abuse.”
