Helsinki is making a special effort to attract gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) tourists, who travel and spend more per person than any other segment of the tourist population.
This spring the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau held a familiarisation trip to Helsinki for GLBT travel agents in cooperation with the Finnish Tourist Board and Hotel Kakslauttanen in Saariselkä.
“Interest in Helsinki among GLBT tourists has increased rapidly in recent years. The feedback we received from the participating travel agents was excellent, and Helsinki is considered an appealing destination with an attractive edge,” says Marketing Director Kari Halonen.
Another initiative is the Gay Friendly Helsinki Network, which provides training and referrals to its members. Those who participate in the programme are awarded the GayComfort label.
“The Gay Friendly network and GayComfort label are important communication tools for reaching out to visitors from other cultures,” comments Halonen.
