Following a change in UK law Lesbian couples can now have both their names registered on the birth certificate of a child conceived following fertility treatment.
Ruth Hunt, Stonewall's Head of Policy and Research, welcomed the change as a positive step which will make life for lesbian families 'easier and fairer'.
Meanwhile, Home Office Minister Lord Brett said "This is an important step forward in the process of affording equality wherever we can in society, especially as family circumstances continue to change".
However the new regulations have not been greeted favourably by some, Conservative MP Nadine Dorries said the move would 'undermined the traditional family model' whilst Labour MP Geraldine Smith described the new law as 'just madness'.
The law applies to lesbian couples who were having fertility treatment on or after April 6th 2009 in England and Wales.
