In a recent interview former US President, Bill Clinton, has admitted that his past objections to same-sex marriage represented outdated views.
Mr Clinton, who passed the Defence of Marriage Act in 1996, which in effect banned same-sex marriage, said he now realised his stance against such unions were wrong.
Rainbow Labor, Australia's lesbian and gay faction, have warmly welcome Mr Clinton's change in position but said there was still a great deal of work to be done in order to persuade Australian politicians to change their attitudes.
Australian law currently defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Same sex civil unions are only recognised in Tasmania, ACT and Victoria.
