The Victorian government has announced a review addressing homophobic violence and harassment. In a move reinforcing recent changes in criminal sentencing, the Brumby Government has established a review of Victoria’s hate crimes legislation.
Greg Adkins, head of the Anti Violence Project (AVP), welcomed the announcement as a next step in dealing with violence towards the GLBTIQ community in Victoria but said it’s not the last step given a current absence of government funding.
“Outcomes from this review of hate-crimes laws must be matched with the provision of an ongoing funding model,” Adkins said.
Adkins said the AVP and other GLBTIQ groups hope to benefit from the review.
“This review enhances any potential outcomes from the work of the ALSO Foundation, the AVP, the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby and Transgender Victoria.”
