'Lascivious lesbian vampires, evil lesbian stalkers, sexploitation films set in women’s prisons or all-girl boarding schools: these negative, stereotypical depictions of lesbians in film have been par for the course. But as a new research project has found, because of an increasing diversity worldwide of representations of female same-sex desire, these older visions are gradually diminishing to make way for a new cinematic canon.
